Fraud in healthcare is not new. Individuals seeking to take advantage of staffing shortages have increasingly been found posing as nurses in hospitals and healthcare facilities around the world. Last month, a Pennsylvania woman faced charges for using 10 different aliases to infiltrate healthcare facilities. She posed as a licensed practical nurse (LPN), registered nurse (RN), and an RN supervisor for five years. Meanwhile, in 2024, a woman in Canada who claimed to be a nurse from at least 2011 — using different aliases in different facilities — was sentenced to seven years in prison.

Aside from inadvertently letting impostors in, healthcare organizations can also fall prey to healthcare hiring mistakessuch as recruiting professionals who don’t have the right specialty or experience. If the recruiting team doesn’t have a great understanding of the qualifications an applicant must possess, they’ll hire professionals who don’t fit the organization’s open roles. This can lead to job dissatisfaction, reduced quality of care, and increased burnout and turnover rates.

To prevent impostors and unqualified professionals from joining the healthcare team, organizations must fortify their recruitment processes. In this article, we discuss the most common hiring mistakes that healthcare organizations must avoid to make.

Common healthcare hiring mistakes

When creating job posts, make sure to include the following elements:

·  An accurate job title that reflects the post’s hierarchy, scope, and specialties

·  A brief job summary that includes the main responsibilities, duties, and tasks

·  Transparent information about pay, available shifts, and hours of work per week, among others

·  A list of qualifications such as educational background, licenses, and certifications

·  Reporting structure

Limiting job posts to one platform
When you post your job openings to just one job board, you’re limiting the number of people who will see and engage with them. Aside from using healthcare-specific and general job boards, it’s a good idea to utilize social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn to build a solid community online.

Opting out of job fairs
Meeting with prospective clients face-to-face is always a good idea, especially when it comes to recruiting for healthcare facilities. Meeting applicants in person allows recruiters to gain better insight into who the most qualified professionals are for their organizations. Recruiters can also expand their professional networks during such events, helping them make long-lasting, mutually beneficial connections with educational institutions, local job placement agencies, and other recruiters.

Not utilizing technology to automate recruitment processes
Gone are the days when recruiters relied on traditional recruitment methodologies, such as publishing job posts in newspapers and job boards. Modern recruiters must leverage technology to make the end-to-end recruitment process as efficient as possible, such as using applicant tracking systems, assessment tools, and automated schedulers.

Failing to conduct comprehensive pre-employment verification
To ensure that applicants are qualified, recruiters must conduct proper pre-employment verification, ensuring that applicants’ credentials, records, and employment history are carefully reviewed and verified. Recruiters can benefit from using tools that help with professional background and criminal record checks to confirm if an applicant is the right workforce fit.
